SUSPEND ISRAEL FROM INTERNATIONAL SPORTS
January 13, 2024Stepping into the vibrant pulse of the Amsterdam protest, I cross paths with Miko. Intrigued by Miko’s insights, we explore the political landscape, starting with MeRA 25’s role in European elections—a dynamic blend of politics and purpose.
Miko passionately shares DiEM 25’s current initiative: a petition to suspend Israel from international sports, echoing historical strategies employed against apartheid-era South Africa. With 30,000 signatures and counting, this movement aims to spotlight Israel’s actions and raise global consciousness through the impactful realm of sports.
Our dialogue weaves through interconnected struggles, touching on the Julian Assange case’s relevance to Gaza and the courage of journalists risking their lives to expose truth. Miko eloquently articulates the broader fight against oppression, transcending geographical boundaries and echoing the global call for justice.
Together, we underscore the ongoing fight against injustice, emphasizing the strength found in unity and persistent activism.

English Script:
Daizy: We’re at the protest in Amsterdam, and I’ve just bumped into this incredible man who saw me in The Hague yesterday, and he’s hanging up these flyers. But let’s get to know you. You’re just telling me that you’re part of a political party?
Mikko: Yeah. Yeah, DiEM 25. It is a pan-European political movement. It’s not a party or something. We do have a party, its MeRA 25
Daizy: Okay.
Mikko: So, DiEM 25 is in most European countries, But MeRA 25 is currently in…we have one in Greece, Germany and Italy, and we’re also taking part in that in the upcoming European elections.
Daizy: Fantastic.
Mikko: And now. Of course, we are…we are pressing on this, pressing issue.
Daizy: To suspend Israel from international sports. That’s a petition that they are promoting.
Mikko: Yeah.
Daizy: And you’ve got about 30,000 people sign.
Mikko: At the moment, last I checked, it’s around 30,000 signatures. And the idea is, of course, to do what was done with South Africa back in the eighties, to isolate them on all levels. Sport is a very important one because it also touches people on the ground level, and raises the awareness of this issue.
Daizy: Fantastic. Why is it important to you? You’re not Palestinian, you’re not South Africa. Why is it important to you?
Mikko: No, I am originally from Finland, and I live in the Netherlands since 20 years, my wife is South African, actually. But regardless that yeah, we live in a time when the rest of the earth let me say, is increasingly paying the price for the standard of living we have here for instance. And what Biden did now and the UK and US in Yemen
Daizy: Bombing Yemen
Mikko: Bombing Yemen against the US constitution. You know it’s not self-defense of US, it’s defense of capitalism, you know and essentially that is what’s happening in Israel as well. It’s this colonial system, this powerful people doing what powerful people can do because they can do it.
Daizy: So, you want to end oppression? really, it’s oppression…
Mikko: Exactly. that’s a long, long fight.
Daizy: Yeah.
Mikko: This particular struggle that we have is very a devastating one going on in Gaza.
Daizy: But yeah, it’s all connected.
Mikko: It’s all connected, it’s all connected. So we are, we are busy with the Julian Assange case. He’s having his last day in court at the end of February.
Daizy: Yeah,
Mikko: Very pertinent also in terms of Gaza, because, you know, every day journalists are being killed there, over 100 now.
Daizy: Yes.
Mikko: Just to hide the crimes that Israel is doing there.
Daizy: Yes 100%.
Mikko: They’re trying, South Africa did some digging there…all this mass media not reporting it,
Daizy: So, we have to report it. That’s why we’re here. That’s why I am in Amsterdam, and that’s why I went to The Hague. And that’s why it’s important for us to continue to promote it and expose it on social media. Thank you.
Mikko: Thank you.
Daizy: Thank you very much.
