U.S. RETALIATORY STRIKES ON IRANIAN BASES IN SYRIA & IRAQ RISK REGIONAL ESCALATION
February 3, 2024Tensions in the Middle East continued to escalate to new heights after the US military carried out strikes on over 85 targets in Iraq and Syria in response to the killing of three US soldiers last Sunday.
“At my direction, US military forces struck targets at facilities in Iraq and Syria that the IRGC and affiliated militia use to attack US forces,” said US President Joe Biden in a statement yesterday, referring to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC).
“Our response began today. It will continue at times and places of our choosing,” he added.
Despite both Iran and the US, claiming not to want to escalate attacks into a full-blown war in the region, this action by the US today indicates differently.
The reality is that the people of the Middle East are facing the prospect of a regional war involving major global powers as a result of Israel’s belligerent violence and aggression against the Palestinians in Gaza.
