UN CHIEF BACKS UNRWA AS NETANYAHU LIES TO HAVE IT SHUTDOWN
February 4, 2024While UN Chief Antonio Guterres reiterated UNRWA’s fundamental role in the aid to Gaza, after several states paused funding to the UN agency over Israel’s claim that some UNRWA staff were involved in the October 7 attack, Israeli Prime Minister continued to peddle his lies about the organisation.
No one is buying his BS anymore. In fact, Canada yesterday changed its stance and agreed to increase funding for Palestinians through other NGOs (not UNRWA) so as to to avoid the ire of Israel. This comes after it announced last week that it would cut funding to UNRWA.
As Guterres stated: “UNRWA is the backbone of all humanitarian response in Gaza.”
Without it the Palestinians would surely die of famine, disease and freezing.

Antonio Guterres: I underscored the importance of keeping UNRWA’s vital work, going to meet the dire needs of civilians in Gaza, and to ensure its continuity of services to Palestine refugees in the occupied West Bank, Jordan, Lebanon and Syria. UNWRA is the backbone of all humanitarian response in Gaza. I appeal to all Member States to guarantee the continuity of UNWRA’s life saving work.
Netanyahu: South Africa had the temerity to bring us to the ICJ, charging us with genocide against really, in the service of the genocidal organization. Now, the worst thing that I can say is this, that many of the charges, false and unfounded, that were leveled against us in The Hague were brought by UNWRA officials, and we have discovered in the last few weeks that UNWRA officials were complicit in the massacre.
And I think it’s time that the international community and the U.N. itself understand that UNRWA’s mission has to end. UNWRA is self-perpetuating. It is self-perpetuating also in its desire to keep alive the Palestinian refugee issue and we need to get other U.N. agencies and other aid agencies replacing UNWRA if we’re going to solve the problem of Gaza, as we intend to do.
