“The younger you are, the further on the RIGHT you are”, according to American Jewish writer, activist, and political commentator, Phyllis Bennis.
Focusing mainly on issues related to the Middle East and the United Nations, Bennis is a strong critic of Israel and the United States and a leading advocate of Palestinian rights.
She directs the New Internationalism Project at the Institute for Policy Studies in Washington D.C. and is a fellow of the Transnational Institute in Amsterdam. She has written – among other books – Understanding the Palestinian-Israeli Conflict.
During her address at the College of St Scholastica, in Minnesota, she articulated how the Israeli population is being taught an ideology of victimhood and the justification of attacking others due to their victimhood. This has led to the Israeli society becoming more and more extreme!!
She outlined how the most progressive in Israeli society are those 65 and over! This is contrary to the usual trend of older generations being more conservative and the younger generations being more progressive.

Phyllis Bennis: Public opinion in Israel has moved so far to the right and the creation of new right wing parties has grown so much that you now have this coalition that’s between the right, the far right, the extreme right, and what I carefully will call the fascist right. That’s the alliance. So Netanyahu’s fear is not about the left. He’s not worried about the Labor Party, let alone Meretz or the Joint List, which is the group of Arab parties. He’s worried about his right wing. That’s where the, he could be unseated by the right, not by the left. So that’s kind of the political side. At the level of people, the polls all indicate that the younger you are, the further right you are. That the most progressive cohort is the 65 and up. And then the next is the 55 to 65. It’s direct. And the most right wing are the kids. And that’s because Israel has an incredibly successful, powerful, ideologically driven educational system that raises children to believe that they are victims and that they have the right to fight back against anybody who attacks them because they’re victims and that therefore, anything they do militarily is self-defense. So there is no sense of challenge to the idea of living in a militarized society.
