UN SECURITY COUNCIL’S AUTHORITY SEVERELY UNDERMINED BY RESPONSE TO GAZA
February 27, 2024
United Nations chief António Guterres last night delivered a stern criticism to the members of the UN Security Council in relation to their response to Israel’s war on Gaza saying it had “fatally undermined its authority.”
The secretary general also warned that Israel’s planned attack on Rafah, home to 1.5 million Palestinians, will be the final nail in the coffin for the UN’s aid work.

Guterres: I repeat, my call for humanitarian ceasefire and the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages. The Security Council is often deadlocked, unable to act on the most significant peace and security issues of our time. The council’s lack of unity on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and on Israel’s military operations in Gaza following the horrific terror attacks by Hamas on seven October, has severely but perhaps fatally undermined its authority. An all-out Israeli offensive on the city (Rafah), would not only be terrifying for more than a million Palestinian civilians sheltering there, it would put the final nail in the coffin of our aid programs. Tens of thousands of civilians, including women and children, have been killed in Gaza. Humanitarian aid is still completely insufficient. Our world is becoming less safe by the day.
