ISRAEL’S SMOTRICH ANNOUNCES OFFICIAL ANNEXATION OF PALESTINIAN LAND
March 23, 2024In a move that directly and openly breaches the Oslo Peace Accords of 1993 that clearly designated areas in the West Bank and Gaza as Palestinian land, and as mounting pressure grows around the world against the violent, illegal and genocidal actions of the apartheid Israeli state against the Palestinians in Gaza, the far-right cabinet of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has announced it is annexing nearly 2000 acres of Palestinian land.
On Friday, Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, announced the allocation of approximately 8,000 dunams, equivalent to 1,976 acres, of occupied Palestinian land in the Jordan Valley, designating it as state-owned territory. This decision opens the door for various new Israeli settler development initiatives on the newly declared land and further erodes the land agreed in the Oslo Accords to the Palestinians.
Among the planned developments are the construction of numerous housing units for settlements, as well as areas designated for industrial and commercial purposes. This move has been described by activists as one of the most significant actions of its kind in recent decades.
The plan spearheaded by Smotrich, demonstrates Israel’s reluctance to comply with peace agreements reached with Palestinians and highlights the ongoing efforts to strengthen Israeli settlements across the country, particularly in Judea and Samaria, to push Palestinians out of those areas.
The annexation marks the largest such action since the Oslo Accords, with 2024 setting a new record.
