“WORLD LAW & ORDER IS BEING SACRIFICED ΤΟ PROTECT ISRAEL”
May 25, 2024
In another moving and pointed address to the members of the United Nations Security Council and the world, late this week, the Deputy Permanent Oberserver of the state of Palestine, Mr Majed Bamya, reminded the members why the Geneva Conventions were created after WWII and their role in upholding those International conventions,
“”The Geneva Conventions were adopted 75 years ago to protect people not taking part in hostilities, primarily civilians… the priority was to restore the principles of humanity and distinction…It is precisely this protected population that is targeted by Israel in Gaza,”” he stated.
He continued saying that: “”This Council has a responsibility to bring these resolutions to life on the ground in Palestine. Israel leaves you with only one choice that will be decisive for the future of international law: SACRIFICE the rules and mechanisms put in place to defend the civilian population and international law, in order to PROTECT the IMPUNITY of Israel, or put an end to this impunity to DEFEND the RULES and MECHANISMS.
The choice is very clear to most of the world, however some states are MISGUIDED.

Majed Bamya: Thank you, Mr. President. The Geneva Conventions were adopted 75 years ago to protect people not taking part in hostilities, primarily civilians. They were adopted in response to the Second World War which had hit civilians hard in the absence of identifiable front lines. And so the priority was to restore the principles of humanity and distinction to restore the protection of civilians now exposed more than ever to the horrors of war. Since then, humanity has not ceased to reaffirm and reinforce these fundamental rules, including the Security Council, which 25 years ago took the commitment to promote the protection of civilians and adopted resolutions concerning civilians and the categories whose protection was particularly important, including children, women, humanitarian personnel and journalists. It is precisely this protected population that is targeted by Israel in Gaza. Gaza has seen the largest number of children killed, UN personnel killed, national and international humanitarian personnel, and journalists killed. It is year zero of international law in Gaza, year zero of international law in Gaza, as if no rules had been elaborated. But the rules exist, and their blatant violation must be sanctioned. Mr President, never has a civilian population been targeted in such a way, in an exiled territory, besieged, bombed, starved. They move in a cage, trying to avoid death, with nowhere to go, forced to move from one death to another. Palestinians were brutally executed after being detained while they were tied up, with their eyes blindfolded. Mass graves were discovered, which reveal the magnitude and horror of the crimes. Palestinian prisoners, including the thousands arrested in the last six months, are being tortured, which has led to amputations and deaths in detention. In Gaza, an entire population is besieged, bombed, starved. And famine is not the unwanted result of the war, but an additional weapon deployed by Israel against the Palestinian people. Does anyone here not think that Palestinian parents suffer when they lose their children? Can anyone here who has children, who knows children, imagine what the fate of these orphans, these amputees, these traumatized children is like, for life? In West Bank, the attacks of the settlers and Israeli occupation forces are incessant and they have killed more than 500 and injured thousands over the last six months, including yesterday in Jenin, where a surgeon, a professor and students were killed. Instead of being held responsible, Israel, confident in the impunity it has enjoyed until today, accuses and incites. It accuses and incites against the UN, we saw it again today in the speech of the Israeli representative’s speech, against humanitarian agencies, including UNRWA, against NGOs, against the states that dare to denounce these crimes. It accuses of anti-Semitism, of complicity with terrorism and Nazism, all of them, including its closest allies. Without any shame. This Council has a responsibility to bring these resolutions to life on the ground in Palestine. Israel leaves you with only one choice that will be decisive for the future of international law: sacrifice the rules and mechanisms put in place to defend the civilian population and international law, in order to protect the impunity of Israel, or put an end to this impunity to defend the rules and mechanisms. The choice seems obvious, but some states are misguided. We call on them to wake up before it is too late, so that shame will not pursue them forever for the choices they make and for their complicity, whether by their actions or their inaction, in the face of the ongoing genocide in Gaza. A state above the law will always behave like a state outside the law, and that is what we see today.
