DIRECTOR OF SHIFA HOSPITAL RELEASED FROM ISRAELI PRISON
July 1, 2024The director of Gaza’s al-Shifa Hospital was released from Israeli custody, apparently without charge, seven months after he was detained on accusations of working with Hamas.
Mohamed Abu Salmiya was arrested from a U.N. convoy carrying wounded civilians away from heavy fighting in Gaza City during one of the most indelible chapters of Israel’s genocide in Gaza, as Israeli officials raided the al-Shifa medical complex as a “crucial war aim”.
Abu Salmiya was arrested in November, after Israeli forces raided Gaza’s largest and most important hospital compound. The Israeli military had accused the medical director of allowing Hamas to use the complex as a command and control center.
A Washington Post analysis later found that evidence presented by the Israeli government fell short of supporting claims regarding the facility’s active use as a command hub.
Dr Abu Salmiya said Israeli forces had deprived all prisoners of their basic rights during detention.
“All prisoners have lost up to 30 kilograms due to food deprivation,” he said told press conference at Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis, south Gaza.
“I was subjected to almost daily torture in Israeli prisons. Our release from prison occurred without a deal, and the Israeli court confirmed that there were no charges against us,” he said.
Dr Abu Salmiya said the detainees did not receive any legal or international representation.
“We were prohibited from meeting any lawyer. The assaults on prisoners involve the use of dogs

Youssef Kwaik: Thank God you are safe, doctor. What were the conditions of your arrest like, doctor?
Muhammad Abu Salmiya: The arrest conditions of all the hostages…First may God help the people of Gaza, rest the souls of the martyrs, and heal the wounded. Frankly, the hostages are going through a very tragic situation, something they never experienced in the history of the Palestinian people since 1948 until now. The old and new hostages are living in extremely difficult conditions, including lack of food and water and are exposed to physical humiliation. The hostages are going through it all right now. There must be a decisive decision from the resistance and the Arab and Islamic peoples to release all hostages from prisons. What the hostages are experiencing is a situation that the Palestinian people have not experienced since the Nakba until now.
