UAE DEPORTS STUDENTS FOR YELLING “FREE PALESTINE”
July 12, 2024The UAE reportedly deported a student for shouting “Free Palestine” during a graduation ceremony at New York University’s (NYU) Abu Dhabi campus in May.
Although the incident took place in May, the news resurfaced with many major media outlets reporting on it since Tuesday, including Al-Jazeera and AP.
The Washington Square News, the NYU student newspaper, wrote about the situation in June, noting that the PhD student was allegedly detained for a week and then deported after he carried a keffiyeh, a scarf symbolizing support for the Palestinian cause.
This comes as part of NYU Abu Dhabi’s regulation during the ceremony, which barred graduates from carrying or decorating their caps and gowns with symbols or scarves.
“The regulations reflected escalating concerns over academic freedom at the campus, which students and faculty described in ‘very distressing accounts’ to NYU’s chapter of the American Association of University Professors,” the student newspaper wrote.
