Paul Salvation: You say, “The only language left is the language of death. It is how Israel speaks to the Palestinians. It is how the Palestinians are forced to speak back.” So I’m wondering if you can expound on that.
Chris Hedges: So Israel’s intent was always to cleanse historic Palestine. That intent had to be denied because it would make it hard to mollify the Palestinians, and it would be hard for Israel to project the image of the only democracy in the Middle East. But the intent was always there. So you reached a point. I think Oslo was really the moment that the Palestinians realized that there would never be a peaceful solution. And finally, Arafat wasn’t willing to be a quisling, I think most of us who covered the Middle East believe he was murdered by the Israelis. But after that, I think it was clear to the Palestinians that Israel had no intention of honestly attempting to create a two state solution.
