New Zealand MP Chloe Swarbrick Suspended After Explosive Palestine Debate — TRTWORLD
August 15, 2025
Speaking up for Palestine shouldn’t cost you your seat.
On Aug 12, NZ MP Chloe Swarbrick was suspended and ordered out of parliament for a week after a heated clash over the government’s stance on Palestine.
Her “offense”? Challenging her colleagues to face the reality of Gaza and demanding accountability for New Zealand’s role — or lack of action — in the face of ongoing atrocities.

English Script:
Chloe Swarbrick: 146 UN member states currently recognize Palestinian statehood. That is, three quarters of the United Nations membership. And so far over the last few weeks, we have seen that the United Kingdom, Canada, France and Australia have all moved to commit their intent. But so far, all our government can seem to do is commit to a process. Mr. speaker, utterly beggars belief. Human rights should not be conditional. So, Mr. Speaker, I will reiterate my call for the government to pick up our unlawful occupation of Palestine sanctions bill, and to sanction Israel for its war crimes. If we find 6, if 68 government MPs with a spine, we can stand on the right side of history.
Speaker of the House: That is completely unacceptable to make that statement. Withdraw and apologize.
Chloe Swarbrick: No.
Speaker of the House: Then leave the house for the rest of the week.
Chloe Swarbrick: Happily.
