Netherlands Declares Israel a Security Threat — Despite Being Its Largest Investor
January 17, 2026
NETHERLANDS CALLS ISRAEL A SECURITY THREAT.
Not an enemy.
Not a rival.
A risk.
When even investors start speaking the language of security,
the ground has already shifted.

Dr Phoebe O’Brien: The Netherlands have designated Israel as a national security threat. That is super interesting because the Netherlands is also the largest investor in Israel as a country anywhere in the world. If you look up here, the top graph shows the largest investors in Israel, the EU being the largest one, even larger than the United States. And then out of all of the EU countries, the largest two investors here are the Netherlands and Luxembourg. What do these two countries have in common? They are massive tax havens, and it gets even more interesting when you look at what countries Israel is investing in, because you can see here that once again, the EU is by far the largest region, which is getting investment from Israel way more than the United States. And once again, the Netherlands is getting the most investment from Israel as a country. So this move is actually historic. Not only is it the first EU country to designate Israel as a national security threat, it’s also the one which is receiving the largest investment from them. The reasons that were cited were disinformation campaigns endangering the lives of Dutch citizens. So this is all talking about a football match that happened last year in November with the team, the Maccabees from Israel, when they ransacked Amsterdam and 30 people were injured. And there was a huge disinformation campaign put out by Israel in the preceding weeks. But the Netherlands also host the International Criminal Court at The Hague, and they’re becoming increasingly worried about threats from both Israel and the US. So let’s see how long it takes for the other European powers to follow suit after this fast and very important domino has fallen. And as always, I cannot wait for the West to fall.
