Actor Warns of a ‘Dictatorship of the Monsters’ as He Criticises Donald Trump
June 7, 2026
Richard Gere, actor and human rights activist, did not mince his words.
Speaking at the Oslo Freedom Forum, Gere warned that the world is living through one of the most dangerous political moments of his lifetime, describing the rise of authoritarianism as a threat that can happen faster than many people realise.
Referring to Donald Trump, he asked:
“Whoever thought a maniac like this would be president of the United States?”
Gere went on to warn of what he called a “dictatorship of the monsters,” urging people not to assume that democratic institutions will protect themselves.
His warning was not just about one politician.
WAAKE UP!!

Richard Gere: We’re living in the darkest moment that I’ve experienced on this planet. Whoever thought America could turn like this? Who ever thought that a maniac like this would be president of the United States and dismantle…?Wait, wait. No, no. I don’t want you to applaud. This is something for us to really communicate. Dismantle all the good things. America’s never been a perfect place, but it has a perfect ideal that it’s moving towards and always has. And it’s been self-corrective. First day, this guy dismantled almost everything that was good about the US government and the US people. How is this even possible? Because we went to sleep. We went to sleep. Wait, wait. We went to sleep. We didn’t care. We didn’t vote. We didn’t really listen. But you see how quickly our world can be taken from us if we fall asleep. And we have to see the cues. We have to see the cues. This dictatorship of the monsters, how quickly it happens. We have to be vigilant.
