“THAT IS A SHAMEFUL SLIGHT ON PEOPLE COMING FROM GAZA.”
The Bondi Beach attack was carried out by two men with no connection whatsoever to Palestinian refugees or the pro-Palestine movement. Zero. Even Jewish community voices in Australia have said as much. And yet, in its aftermath, some politicians saw an opening to target an entirely unrelated, already-vulnerable community instead.
Senator David Shoebridge’s answer was direct: “We absolutely support” people fleeing Gaza — people fleeing genocide and bigotry, not the cause of an unrelated tragedy. Palestinian refugee applications to Australia are overwhelmingly refused, even as families flee a warzone, while the actual attackers’ backgrounds get quietly left out of the conversation.
Real hate deserves a real response. Not a political opportunity to blame people who are themselves fleeing the very violence they’re being accused of bringing.
The race to the bottom on immigration doesn’t make anyone safer. It just finds a new group to punish for something they didn’t do.

لقد نُفذ هجوم شاطئ “بوندي” على يد رجلين لا تربطهما أي صلة على الإطلاق باللاجئين الفلسطينيين أو بالحركة المؤيدة لفلسطين؛ لا توجد أي علاقة تذكر. وقد أكدت أصوات من داخل الجتمع اليهودي في أستراليا هذه الحقيقة أيضاً. ومع ذلك، رأى بعض السياسيين في أعقاب الحادث فرصة لاستهداف فئة مجتمعية أخرى لا علاقة لها بالأمر، وهي فئة تعاني أصلاً من أوضاع هشة.
كان رد السيناتور ديفيد شوبيردج مباشراً: “نحن ندعم تماماً” الأشخاص الفارين من غزة؛ أولئك الذين يهربون من الإبادة الجماعية والتعصب، وليسوا سبباً في مأساة لا علاقة لهم بها. في المقابل، تُرفض الغالبية العظمى من طلبات لجوء الفلسطينيين إلى أستراليا -حتى وهم يفرون من منطقة حرب- بينما يتم تجاهل خلفيات المهاجمين الحقيقيين في النقاش العام بهدوء.
إن الكراهية الحقيقية تستوجب رداً حقيقياً، لا استغلالاً سياسياً لإلقاء اللوم على أشخاص يفرون هم أنفسهم من العنف ذاته الذي يُتهمون بجلبه.
إن الانحدار بمستوى النقاش حول الهجرة إلى هذا المستوى المتدني لا يجعل أحداً أكثر أماناً؛ بل يقتصر الأمر على إيجاد مجموعة جديدة لمعاقبتها على أفعال لم ترتكبها.
