What’s happening in the media right now as Israel plans to invade Lebanon is truly frightening and something we all need to pay attention to. The right wing British daily newspaper The Telegraph, recently published an extremely controversial article citing unnamed whistleblowers who claim that the militant group Hezbollah was storing huge quantities of Iranian weapons and explosive at Beirut’s International airport. The article has been heavily criticized by many for its lack of credible evidence, instead relying purely on anonymous sources. In addition, the lack of a byline or named author of the article resurfaced suspicions of the motive behind the publication. The Lebanese government says it plans to sue the Telegraph for tarnishing the airport’s reputation, with the Lebanese Air Transport Union saying the article endangers the airport workers and passengers. These false claims have already been repeated by many mainstream media outlets, and so many believe that the true purpose behind this publication was to serve as a justification or pretext for an Israeli strike on the airport, something which would kill countless civilians. This is what scholars such as Noam Chomsky have described as “Manufacturing Consent”, which argues that mainstream media outlets such as the Telegraph often publish articles that shape public opinion in order to manufacture consent for policies that benefit the ruling elite. We’ve seen this time and time again in the past. For example, with false claims of a Hamas command center beneath Gaza’s al-Shifa hospital being circulated in the media prior to Israel’s brutal raid, which killed hundreds of people. And now we are witnessing the same thing happening in Lebanon. Israel has made it clear that they are planning to invade Lebanon, but they need a justification in order to limit public outcry. And the Telegraph, a right-wing news publication that’s been criticized for being inaccurate and being sometimes pure propaganda is serving to manufacture consent for this attack.
