\nDaizy Gedeon: Is Lebanon being pressured into normalizing ties with Israel? With the reform government now in place, reports are circulating calling for normalization with Israel. But for decades, Lebanon has refused to recognize Israel and are technically still in a state of war, despite signing agreement in May 1983 recognizing each other’s right to live in peace. But now, with a new government in play and international actors demanding reforms, some see normalization as a way to unlock foreign aid and investment into Lebanon to jumpstart the economy. But at what cost? Israel has been the greatest contributor and major cause of Lebanon’s physical destruction over the past four decades. Just in the past six months, they obliterated entire towns and villages and massacred thousands across south Lebanon and the Bekaa region. Any serious steps toward standardizing relations with Israel could also trigger a civil war within Lebanon, as the majority of political parties and sectarian groups reject the notion of normalization, viewing it as a betrayal of Lebanon’s sovereignty and the Palestinian cause. And for it to be approved, all major sects in Lebanon have to sign off on it. So those speaking of normalization obviously display a lack of understanding of the Lebanese political dynamics.
