\n\u201cTHIS ISN\u2019T HAVANA\u201d: THE US AND CUBA SHOUT IT OUT AT THE UN<\/p>\n

On October 27, US Ambassador Mike Waltz and Cuba\u2019s Foreign Minister Bruno Rodr\u00edguez Parrilla clashed on the floor of the UN General Assembly during the annual debate on the US embargo on Cuba, and proceedings were briefly suspended.<\/p>\n

It started when Waltz used his speech to attack Cuba\u2019s government, accusing its leaders of corruption and urging countries to reject the resolution against the embargo. Rodr\u00edguez walked toward the front of the hall and raised a point of order, calling the US ambassador a liar. Waltz shot back: \u201cThis isn\u2019t Havana.\u201d<\/p>\n

Behind the shouting is a vote that has been taken 33 times before. The General Assembly votes this week for the 34th year on a non-binding resolution condemning the embargo, which has been in place for more than six decades. Last year it passed 165 to 7, with 12 abstentions.<\/p>\n

Cuban officials say this year the US is pressuring other countries to vote against the resolution, which Washington hasn\u2019t confirmed. They also say recent US fuel restrictions are devastating Cuba\u2019s health system, a claim the US disputes, arguing the island\u2019s problems come from its own leaders.<\/p>\n

Today\u2019s vote is the 34th. If the world still says no to the embargo, will Washington listen this time?<\/p>\n
