A Sky News investigation has revealed that Egyptian company Hala is charging Palestinians $5,000 per person to leave Gaza, and could be making as much as $1 million a day from exploiting the suffering and desperation of the Palestinian people.<\/p>\n

Before the war, it was possible to travel with Hala for $350. But since 7 October, Hala has increased its prices 14-fold.
\nFor most people still stuck in the Gaza Strip, this option is unaffordable, but it\u2019s their only way out.<\/p>\n

\nMichelle Inez Simon: SkyNews obtained these videos showing hundreds of people gathering outside an office building in Egypt. It turns out they’re trying to secure a way out of Gaza for their family and friends, but it comes at a price. The offices belong to \u201cHala\u201d, an Egyptian company that has been charging Palestinians $5,000 per person to get out of Gaza. That’s about \u00a34,000. A Sky News investigation has found that the company has raised its prices 14 folds since the began and could be making up to $1 million a day. Many are trying to raise tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars online to afford the costs.<\/p>\n

Hend Al Wahaidi: We were shocked with the prices. This is something absolutely out of our league.<\/p>\n

Michelle Inez Simon: But for most Palestinians in Gaza, this is their only option.<\/p>\n

Amani: They asked for $5000for an adult and $2500 for a kid. How can we provide it? <\/p>\n

Michelle Inez Simon: Sky News spoke to more than 70 Palestinians and analyzed documents and videos to understand how \u201cHala\u201d operates and how its prices are affecting people who are desperate to escape the war in Gaza. Officially, Egypt and Israel are only allowing the exit of foreign nationals and injured evacuees through the Rafah crossing, which is the only way people can currently get in and out of the strip. In reality, there’s a third option. We found that in recent weeks, half of those receiving permission to leave Gaza did so through \u201cHala\u201d. So this is how it works. Friends and relatives are asked to bring thousands in cash to the company’s headquarters in Cairo. Once people have registered and paid, lists of travelers, names get posted on social media and those on the list have a chance to flee. We estimated profits by analyzing the number of people on dozens of travel lists and calculated how much they were making per person to figure out the total. On the 27th of February alone, they could have made over 1 million in just a day. Videos posted to a travel agency, Social media show what travel with Hala was like before the war. Air conditioned waiting rooms, comfortable bus rides, and it was much cheaper back then. Since the war began, those other agencies have closed up shop, and \u201cHala\u201d now has a complete monopoly, according to multiple sources. Egypt’s foreign minister told Sky News that the government doesn’t condone these practices and is looking into it.<\/p>\n

Samer Shoukry: We will take whatever measures that we need to so as to restrict it and eliminate it totally.<\/p>\n

Michelle Inez Simon: But experts say it’s unlikely that Egypt doesn’t know what’s going on.<\/p>\n

Amr Magdi: There can’t be such economic activity, especially when it is a monopoly without a green light from the military.<\/p>\n

Michelle Inez Simon: \u201cHala\u201d didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment. Half the population of the Gaza Strip is now crammed into Rafah as Israel has yet to set out an evacuation plan. It’s difficult for people still stuck in Gaza to see a future for themselves and their families.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
