\nOne day after the members of the European Union called for an immediate and lasting CEASEFIRE in Gaza, the leaders of Spain, Ireland, Slovenia and Malta announced they stand ready to recognise the State of Palestine as the \u201conly way to achieve peace and security\u201d in the war-ridden region.<\/p>\n

In a breakthrough on Thursday, the EU\u2019s 27 leaders unanimously called for a ceasefire in Gaza for the first time since the outbreak of the war between Israel and Hamas.<\/p>\n

The four leaders of Spain, Ireland, Slovenia and Malta gathered on the margins of a summit in Brussels yesterday to discuss their \u201creadiness to recognise Palestine,\u201d adding they stand ready to do so \u201cwhen it can make a positive contribution and the circumstances are right.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are agreed that the only way to achieve lasting peace and stability in the region is through implementation of a two-state solution, with Israeli and Palestinian States living side-by-side, in peace and security,\u201d a joint statement by the four heads of government reads.<\/p>\n

Nine of the EU\u2019s 27 member states currently recognise Palestinians\u2019 right to a state according to the so-called 1967 borders, which includes the West Bank, the Gaza Strip and East Jerusalem.<\/p>\n

Malta, along with eastern states such as Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Romania and Slovakia, have recognised the Palestinians\u2019 right to statehood since 1988. In 2014, Sweden became the first member state to unilaterally recognise Palestinians\u2019 right to statehood while a member of the bloc.<\/p>\n
