The United Nations Human Rights Council on Friday adopted a resolution calling for Israel to be held accountable for possible war crimes and crimes against humanity in the Gaza Strip, in addition to demanding a halt to all arms sales to the country.<\/p>\n

The adoption prompted several representatives to the Council to cheer and clap as the vote was passed into law.<\/p>\n

It marked the first time that the UN\u2019s top rights body has taken a position on the nearly six-month war, highlighting warnings of \u201cgenocide\u201d in the conflict that has killed more than 33,000 people<\/p>\n

As expected, Israel dismissed it as a “distorted text”.<\/p>\n

The resolution passed with 28 of the council\u2019s 47 member states voting in favour. The United States and Germany were among the six countries that opposed it, while France, Albania and 11 other countries abstained.<\/p>\n
