In an unprecedented move, the Australian government, through its Foreign Minister, Penny Wong, yesterday announced that it is considering recognising Palestinian statehood, saying international recognition could help \u201cbuild momentum towards a two-state solution\u201d with Israel.<\/p>\n

The question of what stance Australia should take on Palestinian recognition has long been fiercely contested within the Labor Party. But it seems, ONE DEAD AUSTRALIAN AID WORKER, has provided the impetus to take this important step.<\/p>\n

It could all be RHETORIC, but I am hoping that Minister Wong and Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, follow through with their words and take an historic step to finally listen to the Australian public, recognise Palestine, end military relations with Israel including cancelling the Elbit Systems contract and stop exporting weapons to Israel. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has absolutely no desire to end the massacres, as he stated earlier today by announcing he had a date for the land invasion of Rafah.<\/p>\n

So it is up to governments like the Australian government, the USA and UK to send a clear and final message to him and his right-wing apartheid cabinet by formally acknowledging Palestinian statehood and cutting ties with Israel, as recommeded by the Jewish Council of Australia last week.<\/p>\n

\n\u0650ABC\u2019s anchor: Well, the federal government is contemplating recognizing Palestinian statehood, with Australia’s foreign minister saying a two state solution is the only hope for peace between Israelis and Palestinians. Penny Wong made the comments in a speech at the Australian National University in Canberra last night, echoing similar sentiments made by the UK’s Foreign Minister, David Cameron. Senator Wong stated that Hamas should have no role in the future of the Palestinian state and that Israel did have a right to defend itself. It’s a major speech that signals a significant policy shift for the Federal government. Let’s bring in our political reporter Evelyn Banfield from Canberra.<\/p>\n

Evelyn Banfield: In this speech that Foreign Minister Penny Wong gave last night, she seems to suggest that Australia is considering recognizing a Palestinian state, saying that international recognition could help build momentum towards a two state solution and enduring peace. Now, she pointed to the thousands of lives lost in the conflict so far in the Middle East. The 1200 Israelis who were killed in the Hamas attack on October seven and then the more than 33,000 Palestinians who’ve been killed by Israel’s attacks since then. Now, she says that we need a pathway out of this endless cycle of violence.<\/p>\n

Penny Wong: There are those who always claim recognition is rewarding an enemy. This is wrong. First, because Israel’s own security depends on a two state solution. There is no long term security for Israel unless it is recognized by the countries of its region. But the normalization agenda that was being pursued before October seven cannot proceed without progress on Palestinian statehood.<\/p>\n

Evelyn Banfield: Now, the foreign minister’s comments last night do follow Australia’s increasing criticism of the Israel government and its actions in Gaza. Only yesterday we heard from Prime Minister Anthony Albanese. He was joining other international leaders around the world in urging Benjamin Netanyahu to not go ahead with a ground invasion in Rafah in southern Gaza.<\/p>\n
