Turkey has taken action against the Zionist state of Israel by imposing export restrictions on Israel until there is a ceasefire in Gaza.<\/p>\n

The Turkish Ministry of Trade said yesterday it will no longer send to Israel items in 54 categories spanning iron and steel products, jet fuel, construction equipment, machines, cement, granites, chemicals, pesticides and bricks.<\/p>\n

The move is considered largely a political decision more than humanitarian following the ongoing criticism faced by the Turkish government over its commercial ties to Israel during the war, something that was seen by many as a factor contributing to a major defeat in local elections at the end of March.<\/p>\n

Turkey\u2019s main opposition party claimed big election victories in the main cities of Istanbul and Ankara.The results were a significant blow for Erdogan, who had hoped to regain control of the cities less than a year after he claimed a third term as president.<\/p>\n

\nVO: Turkey, one of Hamas’ key allies and one of Israel’s biggest trade partners, has just cut off most exports to Israel. Turkey says the embargo will cover 54 categories of goods, including concrete, steel and fuel, and says its because Israel refused to let it carry out air drops into Gaza.<\/p>\n

Hakan Fidan: There is no excuse for Israel to block our attempt to airlift aid to the starving people of Gaza. Faced with this situation, we decided to take a series of new measures against Israel. These measures, approved by our president, will be implemented step by step without delay.<\/p>\n

VO: Relations between the two countries have withered since the war with Hamas began after the terrorist slaughter of Israeli border communities on October 7th. But until now, trade hadn’t been touched. Turkey is Israel’s fifth biggest trade partner, exporting more than $7 billion worth of goods to Israel annually. Raw materials such as iron, steel and plastics taking up the majority of the list.<\/p>\n

Hay Eytan Cohen Yanarocack: We are not talking about like very replaceable goods. We are talking about strategic goods like steel, like marble and cement. These are all very much related to the construction sector, and this is something related with the national security of the state of Israel.<\/p>\n

VO: But the reasoning may be more political than diplomatic. Erdogan’s party just lost a sweeping series of local elections because its traditional Islamist voter base didn’t turn out. Many cited continued trade with Israel as the cause.<\/p>\n

Hay Eytan Cohen Yanarocack: It is very much related to the Turkish politics. During the whole election campaign, Mr. Erdogan was attacked by the Turkish opposition, especially by the Islamist New Welfare Party. That this particular party asked Mr. Erdogan to put an end to all trade relations with Israel.<\/p>\n

VO: Turkey maintains the embargo will continue as long as Israel fights in Gaza. But as many Israelis have abandoned Turkish products amidst souring relations, it’s unlikely to ever recover.<\/p>\n
