T\u00fcrkiye is under significant pressure from the US and Israel to block the flotilla from setting sail and achieving its objective of delivering aid and breaking the blockade.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe best scenario, they said, is that our three ships\u2013one carrying 5,500 tons of humanitarian aid and two carrying the passengers\u2013will reach Gaza and accomplish our mission. Another scenario would be that the Turkish government might cave to pressure from Israel, the United States and Germany, and prevent the boats from even leaving Istanbul. This happened in 2011 when the Greek government buckled under pressure and ten boats were stalled in Greece,\u201dMedea Benjamin, an American political activist and author who is joining the flotilla, said.<\/p>\n

The aim of the mission, according to the Freedom Flotilla Coalition (FFC), is to breach Israel\u2019s naval blockade of the Palestinian enclave, where the United Nations says 1.1 million people are in danger from a looming famine. Since 2007, Israel has maintained a sea, land and air blockade on Gaza under the guise of preventing weapons from reaching Hamas.<\/p>\n

Out of dozens of flotillas that have challenged the blockade over the past decade, only five have reached Gaza\u2019s shores without being intercepted, according to the FFC.<\/p>\n

Nine Gaza-bound flotilla activists were killed in 2010, with the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) finding Israel had used \u201cexcessive\u201dforce and that the activists had acted \u201crecklessly\u201din attempting to breach the blockade.<\/p>\n
