An independent panel released its much-awaited report this week about the UN Relief Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), noting that ISRAELI AUTHORITIES have FAILED to PROVIDE PROOF of their claims that UN staff are involved with terrorist organisations.<\/p>\n

\u201cIsrael made public claims that a significant number of UNRWA employees are members of terrorist organisations. However, Israel has yet to provide supporting evidence of this,\u201d according to the 54-page final report, Independent review of mechanisms and procedures to ensure adherence by UNRWA to the humanitarian principle of neutrality.<\/p>\n

The nine-week review, led by former French minister Catherine Colonna, focused on whether UNRWA was \u201cdoing everything in its power to ensure neutrality.\u201d The report found the agency had significant mechanisms in place to ensure neutrality, probably more than other U.N. organizations or agencies, which Colonna said was \u201ca necessity considering the very difficult environment, complex and difficult situation in which they operate.\u201d<\/p>\n

U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres commissioned Colonna to head up an external review of UNRWA in early February, following accusations from Israeli officials that a dozen of the agency\u2019s staffers were involved in October 7.<\/p>\n

Colonna presented the report to Guterres earlier this week which contained some 50 recommendations to further tighten neutrality.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am confident that implementing these recommendations will help UNRWA fulfil its mandate and restore confidence where needed,\u201d Colonna stated.<\/p>\n

Israeli foreign ministry spokesperson Oren Marmorstein rejected the report.<\/p>\n
