Police attacked and tore down a pro-Palestine protest encampment at the University of Amsterdam yesterday.<\/p>\n

The protest began on Monday when protesters pitched tents and barricaded certain entryways to one of the university\u2019s campuses, demanding the university cut its ties with Israel.<\/p>\n

In the evening, the protest was attacked by pro-Israeli counter-protesters who beat demonstrators and shot fireworks at them, leading to clashes between both sides.<\/p>\n

Authorities eventually decided to empty and remove the encampment at night by deploying riot police and bulldozers after protesters refused to vacate the area. Around 140 people were arrested.<\/p>\n

Gaza solidarity encampments have been appearing at university campuses around the US and across the world in recent weeks, following the example of Columbia University in New York, with protesters demanding their universities divest from Israel.<\/p>\n
