Moments ago, the United Nations General Assembly voted by a more than two-thirds majority on an amended Arab-proposed draft resolution to reconsider and support the State of Palestine\u2019s membership in the UN which enhances their rights and privileges across the UN.<\/p>\n

The historic resolution would expand the rights of Palestine in the UN but falls short of granting it full membership rights in voting. The resolution gives Palestine several rights within the UN assembly such as the right to introduce and co-sponsor proposals and amendments within the UNGA.<\/p>\n

Palestine can also be seated among member states, and raise procedural motions, among other rights.<\/p>\n

The result of the vote is as follows: in favor 143, against 9 abstentions 25. Draft resolution A\/ES10\/L30\/REV.1 is adopted.<\/p>\n

UN full membership requires the Security Council\u2019s support and a two-thirds majority in the General Assembly, per UN regulations.<\/p>\n

On 18 April, a draft resolution proposed by Algeria and supported by 12 votes during a UN Security Council session was blocked by a US veto.<\/p>\n

The new text expresses \u201cdeep regret and concern\u201d about the US negative vote on the Algerian draft.<\/p>\n

Prior to the vote, Riyad Mansour, the representative of Palestine at the UN, delivered a passionate speech to the UNGA demanding the international body admit the State of Palestine as a full member to end decades-old marginalization and denial of the inalienable rights of an oppressed people in waiting.<\/p>\n

Mansour added that despite the countless times he has addressed the UN, he has never spoken to the international body for a more historic vote or during a time of such suffering.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have stood hundreds of times before at this podium, often in tragic circumstances, but none comparable to the ones my people endured today\u2026never for a more significant vote than the one about to take place, a historic one,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
