This week hundreds of pro-Palestinian protesters packed the San Francisco City Hall, marching its halls chanting \u201ccease-fire now\u201d in support of a resolution by Supervisor Dean Preston calling for an end to hostilities in the Israel-Hamas war and condemning Islamophobia and antisemitism.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve been moved to tears by these stories, not just today, but all week,\u201d Preston said. \u201cThe heartbreak, the trauma, that so many people are going through right now, not just because of what\u2019s happening thousands of miles away, but because of how it\u2019s been weaponized in this country through propaganda and disinformation and conspiracy theories, a cease-fire, humanitarian aid and release of all hostages are an essential ingredient for peace abroad and safety and security here in our city.\u201d<\/p>\n

Preston, who is Jewish and whose father and grandparents fled the Holocaust, held back tears as he asked his colleagues to support him in calling for an end to the Israel-Hamas war.<\/p>\n

The resolution calls for a cease-fire, the release of all hostages and the provision of lifesaving humanitarian aid in Gaza. It also condemns rhetoric and attacks based on racial and religious prejudice.<\/p>\n

Pro-Palestinian organizers said an estimated 2,000 people showed up to City Hall on Tuesday in support of the resolution. During seven hours of public comment, only one person spoke against the resolution.<\/p>\n

The resolution comes after weeks of local protests calling for a cease-fire, many of which have attracted thousands of demonstrators.<\/p>\n

Dean Preston: Today I am introducing a resolution, calling for a sustained ceasefire in Gaza, humanitarian aid, and the release of all hostages, and condemning anti-Semitism, Islamophobia, and anti-Palestinian hate. I have heard from thousands of San Franciscans experiencing severe pain and trauma. Palestinians here in our city feel particularly unseen, unheard by this country’s leaders who continue to unconditionally back the destruction of Gaza and the killing of thousands of Palestinians, including thousands of children, even while the vast majority of the American public wants a cease fire.<\/p>\n

Just this morning, I heard from a Palestinian American friend\u2026 From a Palestinian-American friend here in San Francisco who informed me and I quote, \u201cSeven more members of my family have been killed overnight. Excuse me.<\/p>\n
