U.S. envoy to Lebanon, Amos Hochstein, called for urgent de-escalation in cross-border fire exchanges between Hezbollah and Israel.<\/p>\n

During his visit to Beirut, Hochstein said it is in everyone\u2019s interest to resolve the conflict along the blue line between Israel and Hezbollah quickly and diplomatically, noting it is \u201cboth achievable and urgent.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hochstein\u2019s remarks came following his meeting with Lebanese House Speaker Nabih Berri, with whom he discussed a potential deal on Gaza with Israel.<\/p>\n

The U.S. envoy also met with Lebanese Prime Minister, Najib Mikati, who said that \u201c\u201dLebanon does not seek escalation, and what is required is to stop the ongoing Israeli aggression against Lebanon and return to calm and stability on the southern border.\u201d\u201d<\/p>\n

Hochstein said that \u201c\u201da ceasefire in Gaza or an alternative diplomatic solution could also bring the conflict across the Blue Line to an end.\u201d\u201d<\/p>\n

Tensions along the Lebanon-Israel border escalated on Oct. 8, 2023, following a barrage of rockets launched by Hezbollah toward Israel in solidarity with Hamas\u2019 attack on Israel the day before. Israel then retaliated by firing heavy artillery toward southeastern Lebanon.<\/p>\n

Innocent people are dying, property is damaged, families are shattered, and the Lebanese economy continues to decline. The country is suffering for no good reason. It’s in everyone’s interest to resolve it quickly and diplomatically. That is both achievable and it is urgent. The conversations that I had here today in Beirut and the ones that I had yesterday in Israel, both are being conducted because the situation is serious. We have seen an escalation over the last few weeks. And what President Biden wants to do is to avoid a further escalation to a greater war. That is the effort here. It will take everyone’s interest in ending this conflict now. And we believe that there is a pathway diplomatically to do it if the sides agree to it.
