KARIM KAHN UNDER PRESSURE TO INVESTIGATE ISRAEL FOR WAR CRIMES
\nCalls are growing from around the world for the International Criminal Court\u2019s chief prosecutor Karim Khan to investigate potential Israeli war crimes in Gaza and other crimes committed since 7 October.<\/p>\n

The evidence is irrefutable and politicians are joining human rights organisations, civil activists and leaders.<\/p>\n

Kahn did not hesitate to initiate an investigation into Russia\u2019s war crimes within months of the war with Ukraine starting last year, with much less evidence at hand. His impartiality is being questioned<\/p>\n

\nThis is Karim Khan. Karim Khan is the International Criminal Court chief prosecutor. Now, his job is to receive, analyze and investigate referrals of war crimes, genocide and crimes against humanity. Then to conduct prosecutions before the court of people responsible for such crimes. Now, why are we talking about Karim Khan? Well, it may have something to do with people calling him out over potential double standards when it comes to Israel and Palestine.<\/p>\n

Karim Khan recently posted on X that \u201cwillfully impeding relief supplies to civilians may constitute a war crime under the ICC Rome Statute.\u201d But Israel has been doing that to people in Gaza for over 60 days now. When it came to other recent conflicts, Karim Khan acted very quickly. Within a week of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Karim Khan landed in Ukraine and launched an investigation into potential war crimes.<\/p>\n

A year later, the ICC issued an arrest warrant for President Vladimir Putin. Karim Khan visited Israel and some Palestinian cities in the occupied West Bank for the first time since he started his role in early 2021. Despite him saying in a statement on October the 30th that he had made every effort to enter Gaza. But it has not been possible.<\/p>\n

But Karim Khan didn’t go into Gaza during the week long temporary truce in which it was potentially possible to go into Gaza, particularly for a man of his position. During that brief window of opportunity, a high level country delegation went into Gaza to deliver some needed aid and meet with Palestinians who are affected by Israel’s war on Gaza.<\/p>\n

Karim Khan visited Israel despite Israel not being a member of the ICC, and he met with some of the families of the hostages held in Gaza upon the family’s requests, Israel also denies the ICC has jurisdiction over the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. In his visit to Ramallah, he also met with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, who has no power over Gaza.<\/p>\n

But Abbas reportedly urged him to investigate Israeli operations in Gaza as well as the occupied West Bank. But Palestinian human rights groups reportedly refuse to meet with Karim Khan, claiming the prosecutor has favored Israeli claims of human rights abuses since October 7th. Karim also spoke with families of Palestinian victims, but it’s not clear what they spoke about. The ICC said the visit whilst not investigative in nature represents an important opportunity to express sympathy for all victims and engage in dialogue.<\/p>\n

One person online asked, \u201cIs your job to express sympathy or conduct investigations?\u201d And there were also multiple calls for his resignation. Many officials and human rights organizations have called what Israel is doing to the besieged Gaza Strip and its roughly 2.3 million population, clear war crimes. Karim Khan rounded off one of his statements, saying that his office \u201cwill further intensify its efforts to advance its investigations in relation to the situation\u201d. And that International laws are there to protect the most vulnerable. Of the over 17,000 Palestinians that have been killed by Israel since the 7th of October, roughly 70% are women and children.<\/p>\n
