Sudan\u2019s paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and allied militias killed \u201cat least thousands of people\u201d in West Darfur state, an international rights group has said, in what it called apparent \u201ccrimes against humanity\u201d and \u201cgenocide\u201d.<\/p>\n

In a report published on Thursday, Human Rights Watch (HRW) said that RSF attacks on the Masalit tribe and other non-Arab groups between April and November 2023 were some of the worst atrocities in the ongoing civil war which started that April.<\/p>\n

The attacks in el-Geneina, the capital of West Darfur, saw entire neighbourhoods housing primarily displaced Masalit communities looted, burned, shelled and razed to the ground.<\/p>\n

The campaign that amounted to \u201cethnic cleansing\u201d left hundreds of thousands of people as refugees, HRW said in its 186-page report.<\/p>\n

The violence, which included mass torture, rape and looting, peaked in mid-June \u2013 when thousands of people were killed within days \u2013 and surged again in November, it said.<\/p>\n

\nTirana Hassan: The violence and the targeted killings and attacks on the Massalit and other non-Arab communities shows all the hallmarks of ethnic cleansing. The level of urgency that we need to see from the United Nations, and the African Union, is that they should urgently deploy a mission to Sudan to protect civilians and they should start in locations where there is the most risk of these deliberate attacks.<\/p>\n
