The latest update to Meta\u2019s policy regarding use of the word \u201cZionist\u201d comes as the tech titan behind Facebook and Instagram strives to balance free speech with hateful attacks on Jews.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe will now remove content that targets \u2018Zionists\u2019 with dehumanizing comparisons, calls for harm, or denials of existence on the basis that \u2018Zionist\u2019 in those instances often appears to be a proxy for Jewish or Israeli people,\u201d Meta said in a blog post.<\/p>\n

The change expands on Meta\u2019s approach of treating the reference as hate speech when it is used along with antisemitic imagery or clearly references the Jewish people.<\/p>\n

Meta said it will remove content attacking \u201cZionists\u201d when \u2014 rather than being tied to that political movement \u2014 it is pegged to antisemitic stereotypes such as claims they run the world or control the media.<\/p>\n

Meta earlier this month said it is modifying its hate speech policy to take a more nuanced approach when it comes to whether the use of the Arabic word \u201cshaheed,\u201d which is commonly translated as \u201cmartyr\u201d, is hate speech.<\/p>\n

An independent oversight board referred to as a top court for Meta content moderation challenges had recommended the change and welcomed an easing of what has \u201ceffectively been a blanket ban\u201d on the term \u201cshaheed,\u201d according to board member Paolo Carozza.<\/p>\n
