French President Emmanuel Macron has denounced \u201cunacceptable\u201d comments made by an Israel minister who publicly promoted far-right candidate Marine Le Pen before France\u2019s parliamentary elections.<\/p>\n

Israeli news outlets reported Diaspora Affairs Minister Amichai Chikli said the National Rally party leader would be \u201cexcellent for Israel\u201d.<\/p>\n

An angry Macron called Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to complain about the comments.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think I and Netanyahu are of the same opinion. It\u2019s not a personal matter,\u201d Chilkli was quoted as saying.<\/p>\n

Support for Le Pen is based on her positions on Hamas, the International Criminal Court \u2013 where Israeli leaders face accusations of war crimes \u2013 and \u201cthe Jewish community\u2019s fight against anti-Semitism\u201d, said Chilkli.<\/p>\n

The French president told Netanyahu the comments by Chikli are \u201cunacceptable\u201d and considered interference, two sources familiar with the phone call told the Axios news site.<\/p>\n

The call reportedly ended with Netanyahu\u2019s commitment to prevent further statements from his ministers on France\u2019s internal matters.<\/p>\n

One unnamed Israeli official described Chikli\u2019s behaviour as a \u201cdiplomatic bomb\u201d, according to Israeli newspaper Haaretz.<\/p>\n

Le Pen and the National Rally have taken a pro-Israel stance on foreign affairs in recent years in an attempt to move the party away from accusations of anti-Semitism, after her father and party founder once referred to Nazi gas chambers as a \u201cdetail of history\u201d.<\/p>\n

Foreign Minister Israel Katz tweeted during the second round of voting that Israel is \u201cnot involved in the French elections and respects French democracy\u201d.<\/p>\n
