\nOren Yiftachel: Is Israel an ethnocracy? Most people think that Israel is the only democracy in the Middle East, but my research over many decades has shown that it’s more accurately defined as an ethnocracy, a regime type that has a thin layer of formal democracy, but below it there is a project of maintaining and deepening the domination of one ethno national group over others. Israel was created in 1948 as a Jewish state and enacted dozens of laws to maintain Jewish privilege over other groups. It\u2019s prominent in three main areas. The armed forces, a by and large Jewish army, Jewish armed forces and security forces that maintain Jewish domination. Second, land and planning. Most land, Palestinian land, has been confiscated and hundreds of Jewish settlements have been established on these lands, maintaining Jewish spatial domination. Economic development, most resources has been channeled to the Jewish population, therefore widening the gaps between Jews and Arabs in the state because ethnocracies are not fully democratic, they are characterized by long and protracted conflict between ethnic groups.
