BREAKING NEWS!!<\/p>\n

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) has issued an advisory opinion on Friday finding Israel\u2019s decades-long occupation of the Palestinian territories to be illegal, stating that it amounts to \u201cde-facto annexation.\u201d<\/p>\n

The decision follows a request in December 2022 by the United Nations General Assembly for the court to give its view on Israel\u2019s policies and practices towards the Palestinians and on the legal status of the 57-year-long occupation of Palestinian lands.<\/p>\n

ICJ President Nawaf Salam said Israel\u2019s policies and practices, including settlements and associated infrastructure, and exploitation of natural resources, \u201care designed to remain in place indefinitely,\u201d and amount to \u201cde-facto\u201d annexation.<\/p>\n

Among other comments, he said that the \u201ctransfer by Israel of settlers\u201d to the occupied territories was contrary to the Geneva Convention, adding that Israel\u2019s occupation of natural resources is \u201cinconsistent with Palestinians right to sovereignty over natural resources.\u201d<\/p>\n

The advisory opinion has no binding force but carries significant legal and moral authority, and could increase pressure on Israel over its assault on Gaza.<\/p>\n
