Interviewing locals in Lebanon about the escalating ISRAEL – HAMAS war.

The world is consumed and concerned by the tragedy unfolding on a daily basis in Gaza. So too the people of Lebanon. Not only because of the humanitarian crisis and the killing of civilians on both sides including the massacre of nearly 10,000 Palestinian civilians, mostly children, over the past three weeks, but also because of what it means for Lebanon.
The threat to Lebanon of being drawn into this war are very real with Hezbollah and Israel intensifying their attacks across the southern border. With the battlefield demarcation widening on a daily basis. Hezbollah leader, Sayed Hassan Nasrallah is preparing to make his first public address on the war this Friday which will clarify whether Lebanon will enter the war. Unfortunately, the limp Lebanese government has no control or power over Hezbollah, only Iran does. So, our fate is inextricably linked to what Iran decides and how willing they are to offer up Lebanon and the Lebanese people as sacrificial lambs in this global power struggle.
I decided to gauge the temperature on the streets of Beirut among ordinary folk, gathering their reactions on the war and how it might affect them if it spreads to Lebanon. I was surprised by some of the responses.

Interviewing locals in Lebanon about the escalating ISRAEL – HAMAS war
Daizy: I would like to ask the Lebanese people about the situation happening now in Palestine and about the war, what’s your opinion about it?
Yaacoub: The situation is very tragic, the Palestinian people should’ve claimed their right years ago,
Syrian man (didn’t say his name): What happened in Palestine is sad, the people killed and injured, may God heal them.
Ali : I think what happened should’ve happened long ago, you know? Because it’s an old cause, and since we were born there’s the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and it’s considered occupied, I think everyone agrees on this.
Yaacoub: In my opinion the Palestinians and the Israelis will continue to attack each other, and this is a game of power, and we the people, we’re powerless.
Mariam: Let me say something that breaks my heart. They told them evacuate your homes because we’re going to attack. Okay, they evacuated and left their homes, why did you hit them when they were leaving? You hit the adult, the young and the baby,
Daizy: How do you feel about the Jewish people dying in this battle?
Yaacoub: In principle, I am telling you, any innocent people don’t deserve this for sure. every innocent person, whoever they were, because they’re human, and humans have a right to live with dignity in this world.
Syrian man: They’re all human beings but…May God grant victory to Gaza, there’s nothing else to say. They’re occupying the country.
Mariam: I felt sad for them, but they deserve more than that because of what they did to Palestine, to Gaza, this month alone, what month? These four days. These people don’t fear the God.
Daizy: If Hezbollah and Israel go into a war because they’re attacking each other now and Lebanon is drawn into it, are you scared?
Ali: Of course, no.
Daizy: Why?
Ali: I am not scared. I think we’re ready for this war. We know the power that Hezbollah holds in the country, and I think without Hezbollah and its arms, many things would have happened that were not in the best interests of the country.
Yaacoub: We saw what happened in 2006, even if Hezbollah won and Israel lost badly but also Lebanon was destroyed.
This country doesn’t deserve to be harmed
Ali: The important thing is that the dignity of the Lebanese people isn’t violated, that we don’t become an occupied country.
Brazilian Guy: I think it’s not interesting for Hezbollah to plunge into war now.
I think that they want to show that they are with Hamas. But honestly, they will not go into the war because it will be a complete disaster to Lebanon, now at the moment.
Daizy: Regarding the war that might come to Lebanon,
Mariam: No matter how much Lebanon gets destroyed, it will be rebuilt again, only God beats Lebanon, it’s called the cedar of God, it’s mentioned in Koran, the Bible and the Torah.
Daizy: But the people are getting killed, the children and the youth, if this war arrives to Lebanon, isn’t it bad for the people?
Mariam: Look, Lebanon loves happiness, humor and laughter, it isn’t made for wars, but when it’s time to get serious, Lebanon is ready for it.
