You know, ten years ago when I wrote Sapiens, the world had many problems, but we had an order. There was a global liberal order based on universal values. The basic message of the liberal order was that all human beings belong to the same species. Then you have this wave of populism, not just, you know, in countries like Russia, but within the United States, within the European Union, populists attacking liberal values and ideas, destroying from within the global order.
Again, the very idea of global cooperation became synonymous with treason. You should only care about your country. And the result was that the order collapsed. They didn’t offer anything to replace it. If they attacked the liberal order and said, okay, but we have an idea for a different order. These are the universal values we believe in. These are the global institutions we support.
Okay, let’s talk about it. But they destroyed the order without offering anything to replace it. And when you destroy order, what you get is this disorder, chaos, violence. And if we don’t restore a global order, then the scenes we now see in Israel and in Gaza, unfortunately, we will see them in more and more places around the world.
