@columbia recently shut down an event dedicated to discussing the legacy of Professor Edward Said, arguably the most prominent Palestinian academic in America.
This institution has consistently chosen to capitalize on the legacy of Edward Said when profitable, and then spit him out when it is no longer convenient. They will assign his book Orientalism in classes but refuse to apply his teachings to contemporary issues such as the ongoing genocide of the Palestinian people that Edward Said dedicated his entire career to speaking about.
This clip also raises the fact that for Palestinians and their allies, this harassment and isolation is not new. It has been going on for decades aided and abetted by the same institutions that claim to care about diversity, equity, and inclusion. Columbia is not only failing their Palestinian students right now, but has been failing all their Palestinian students and faculty for decades.
Palestinians have never been safe since the occupation began, whether it be in their own homeland or in exile.
Rest in peace, Edward Said. Your memory is a blessing to all of us who remain inspired by your work and use it to fight for justice. We know that this generation will free Palestine, and we wish you were here to see it.
