AUSTRALIAN GOVT ALL POMP AND NO GUTS
December 13, 2023Australian Greens MP Mehreen Faruqi rightly holds the ruling Australian Labor Party to account in her powerful speech in the Senate directing her attack at the Australian Foreign Minister, Senator Penny Wong, who rejects Faruqi’s request to table the names of over 6000 Palestinians killed in the Israel-Hamas war.
While the Australian Government has recently shifted its stance and supported the UN resolution for an immediate ceasefire at the weekend, Senator Wong and her Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese, refuse to codemn Israel for its undeniable war crimes, while at the same time Wong can speak at the UN about the importance of upholding the UN Charter and attack the use of the veto by Russia, as a permanent member of the UN Security Council.
She demostrates great “”pomp”” in her ceremonial speech about the need to apply uphold the values of the UN Charter, but only if it applies to nations that the Australian government doesn’t have morally-compromised ties with. When the US vetoed the UN ceasefire resolution a few days ago, we did not hear Wong speak up against that “”ABUSE OF POWER””.
WHY NOT SENATOR WONG?
HOW IS WHAT THE USA DID ANY DIFFERENT TO WHAT RUSSIA DID?
PLEASE EXPLAIN?

English Script:
President: Senator Faruqi.
Faruqi: Thank you, President. President. I seek leave to table the names of 6747 people who have been massacred by the state of Israel in the last five weeks. These are the only names available that we have at the moment.
Penny Wong: Is leave granted?
President: Leave is not granted Senator Faruqi.
Faruqi: What I am trying to do today is get this chamber to acknowledge the thousands, the thousands of Palestinians that have been massacred brutally by the State of Israel. These are the names that you don’t want to acknowledge, because for many, these people are not considered humans. But these are humans. These are children. A few months old children. Babies. One-year old, Four-year-old, seven-year-old, ten-year-old. And the list just keeps growing. I met with someone yesterday, 42 members of whose family have been murdered in Gaza. and yet, the Labor government does not have the heart to call for a ceasefire. The Labor government is seeing a child being killed every 10 minutes but won’t call for a ceasefire. Happy to talk weasel words, but weasel words are not going to stop war crimes. I mean, how, how much cowardice are we going to see from this government? Get some guts and stop this massacre. Wake up Labor. Wake up and call for a ceasefire now.
Penny Wong: The security Council has a singular responsibility to the people of the world for the maintenance of international peace and security. The sovereignty of all member states must be respected, that larger countries should not be able to determine the fate of smaller countries.
When the council was established, its members took on a serious obligation. Most especially its five permanent members who were granted a power to veto the will of the chamber. The veto was never intended to empower a country to abuse the UN Charter to be above the law.
Russia’s abuse of its veto is mocking us all. That is the first principle of the U.N. charter and the very rationale for the United Nations itself.
