4 Palestinians & 4 Israelis Debate
December 21, 2023After debating for almost 2 hours, 4 Palestinians and 4 Israeli agreed on the most important aspect…empathy for the suffering on both sides. Insightful discussion, some of it emotionally charged but very worthwhile and more of these discussions need to happen so both sides truly stand in each other’s shoes and appreciate each others fears and doubts.

English Script:
Palestinian woman: We are Palestinians. That doesn’t mean that we’re terrorists. I’m tired of being called a terrorist. I’m tired of being called a Hamas lover. We are humanitarians. Is there good and bad on both sides? Yes. But immediately the spotlight goes straight to us. Oh, you’re Palestinian, so you must be a terrorist and you don’t empathize with the other. If you’re human, you empathize with any loss of life across the globe, no matter what you are.
Israeli woman: And I think so much of this conversation, like we were speaking about before, is overrun by a bunch of random white people who have nothing to do with this (media) at all and like, there’s so much dehumanization that comes from that experience of all these people, kind of like arguing against you or for you and not even understanding you at all.
Palestinian man: Well, I think every one of you guys, from what I felt, have empathy. And I hope you feel that I have empathy, too. I hope you feel that I have deep pain. I hope you feel that I’m from a people that’s been deeply oppressed. I hope you can feel that.
Israeli man: Definitely.
Palestinian man: So, when I asked, “Does Palestine have the right to defend itself?” There shouldn’t be, “From who? What, when?” No. If there’s a human being from Palestine, do I have the right to defend myself?
