TWO AUSTRALIANS KILLED BY ISRAELI AIR STRIKES SOUTH LEBANON
December 29, 2023Funerals were held yesterday for two Australian brothers and the wife of one of the men, who were all killed in a targeted Israeli airstrike on their home in Bint Jbeil in southern Lebanon.
Lebanese media reported that the brothers Ibrahim Bazzi, 27, and Ali Bazzi, 30, were killed in an airstrike in the centre of the city of as was Ibrahim’s wife, Shorouk Hammoud.
The Bazzi brothers’ deaths would make them the first Australians to have died in Lebanon during this conflict, where fighting has occurred near the Israeli border since the start of the Gaza conflict between Israel and Hamas. There is no suggestion Ibrahim was connected to Hezbollah. The militant group posted a message after the attack describing Ali as a martyr.
Hezbollah and Israel have been exchanging missiles, airstrikes and shelling across the Israeli-Lebanese border almost daily since the conflict began on Oct 7. Hezbollah is a Shiite Muslim resistance organisation established in the early 1980s to defend Lebanon against the Israeli’s forces that occupied southern Lebanon for nearly 20 years.

English Script:
Reporter: Good afternoon. Australians in Lebanon are being urged to leave the country following an Israeli airstrike which killed two Australian citizens. The Federal Government has issued a stern warning as funerals have been held for Ibrahim Bazzi and his brother Ali, as well as Ibrahim’s wife, who was also killed. Militant group Hezbollah says that Ali had been living in Lebanon and was one of its fighters. Our government says it’s still seeking facts about the attack.
Mark Dreyfus: We are aware of the announcement made by Hezbollah claiming links to one of the Australians killed. It’s an offense for any Australian to cooperate with, to support, let alone to fight with a listed terrorist organization like Hezbollah. For Australians in Lebanon, we urge you to leave while commercial options remain available.
Reporter: Family members who’ve made their way overseas and the government says it’s ready to provide them with consular assistance.
