Hana-Rawhiti Maipi-Clarke, a 21-year-old Mäori MP, made history in New Zealand’s political sphere after delivering a powerful maiden speech in parliament this week.
As the country’s youngest lawmaker in 170 years, Maipi-Clarke mesmerised the parliament as she performed a haka and advocated for the rights of New Zealand’s native communities, with her speech quickly going viral across social media platforms.
During her speech, Maipi-Clarke urged Maori youth to embrace their native language and cultural identity.
According to a newspaper article, the 21-year-old MP does not see herself as a politician, but rather as a “kaitiaki”, a guardian, for Maori language, the land and for the traditional knowledge.
With 38k followers on Instagram and 40k on TikTok, Maipi-Clarke believes it’s time for a new generation of Mãori voices to be heard.
