ISRAEL HAS NEVER ACKNOWLEDGED ATROCITIES AGAINST PALESTINIANS
January 21, 2024“The major problem with Israel is not what Israel has done, but the fact that it has never been acknowledged,” what it has done to the Palestinian people, explains Edward Said (1935–2003), a renowned Palestinian-American academic, professor of English and Comparative Literature at Columbia University.
Said authored over 20 books and essays covering a wide range of topics such as literal criticism, music, and history. He was an outspoken advocate for Palestinian rights and nationhood. His contributions to academia and public discourse have left a lasting legacy, encouraging critical thinking and a deeper understanding of cultural interactions.
After living with leukaemia for over 10 years, Edward Said passed away on September 24, 2003. In 2001, after the release of his book ‘Power, Politics and Culture’, Said appeared in an interview with Charlie Rose. In this clip, he passionately discusses the main problem faced by Palestinians, which is Israel’s refusal to acknowledge the central role they played in the Palestinian’s removal from their homeland.

English Script:
Edward Said: The main problem for Palestinians is deeply emotional and political. But, please listen to me. I think for us, the major problem with Israel is not what Israel has done, but the fact that it has never been acknowledged. What I think is needed and I don’t think it will ever… peace will ever happen without this, is that an Israeli leader has to make a gesture of compassion and acknowledgment to the Palestinian people. All that we’ve got is a sense of, well, we have no responsibility for what happened. You, everything you’ve done is your problem. Whereas what I think is absolutely necessary is that Israelis individuals do, but what we need is an acknowledgment from the Israeli government of responsibility for what happened to the Palestinian people. There’s no secret about it. Everybody knows that the destruction of Palestinian society was resulted in the establishment of Israel. It’s as simple as that. You have to get rid of one society in order to plant another one. And all the stuff about the future of Israel and the problem of the refugees, the problem of the occupation, all of these things will fall like nine pins.
