Sofia Orr: I realized that it’s not just that I don’t want to enlist. I can’t. There is no reality in which I am going to just take part of it and be complicit in the horrible acts the IDF enacts on the Palestinian people. It’s very strong propaganda from a very young age where we are being taught that being a soldier is an honor and it is something to be proud of. I think it’s like the heart of (Israeli) society, the military. I mean, almost every conversation that you have in Israel, it will start by asking either: “What are you going to do in the military?” or “What did you do in the military?” The moment I started to ask myself the question that the vast majority of Israelis don’t ask themselves: “What does this service actually serve?” Who is it serving? What is it serving? It’s difficult to live in a society that hates you, and it’s difficult sometimes to want to make friends and to discover that even if they don’t hate me, they hate Palestinians. My parents are very supportive and I mean, they are scared for me. They are scared for what I will face in prison, and especially what I would face from the society I live in. Such a big part of my decision to refuse is communicating to Israeli society and especially to young people to show them that refusing is an option, that peace is an option. That military service is a political choice.
