END THE HYPOCRISY! CALL FOR SPAIN TO CUT ALL TIES WITH ISRAEL
February 29, 2024My favourite Spanish politician steps up to teach us another lessor in morality.
After her daughter overheard her talking to her husband about the children being killed in Palestine by the Israelis and questioned her, Mdm Belarra lied to her daughter because she couldn’t admit the failure of her own government and world leaders to stop the genocide in Gaza.
She was so troubled by this experience that it compelled her to ask her political peers in the Spanish parliament: Why can’t we tell our daughters and sons what Israel is doing to Palestinian girls and boys, but instead accept it happening?
She goes on to ask her fellow parliamentarians to vote as people …for breaking diplomatic ties with Israel and vote for an arms embargo…let’s make people proud of us…as the whole world is proud of South Africa…
The hypocrisy must END!

Ione Belarra: I know that many of you have children, families. Surely, some of you have experienced what I did a few days ago. I have a very young daughter, 4 years old, and I was talking to my partner in the living room. I thought she wasn’t listening, and we were discussing the terrible killing of children in Palestine. My daughter overheard us and came running to ask me, “Mom, are they killing children in Palestine?” Honestly, I lied to her. I said no, that she had misunderstood, that they were treating children badly in Palestine, but not killing them. I couldn’t bring myself to tell her the truth. And I know that many others have experienced this too. I want you to ask yourselves, why can’t we tell our children what is happening to Palestinian children, but we accept it happening? That is the problem, ladies and gentlemen, the tremendous hypocrisy, and the image that the mirror is reflecting back to us. That is why today I want to ask you, not as parliamentarians, but as people with families, to vote for peace, to vote for human rights, to vote for breaking Diplomatic relations with Israel, to vote for an arms embargo. Let’s make a difference, let’s make the people of our country proud of us. Let’s make them proud of what we are as a country, as the whole world is proud of what South Africa did, of what Ireland did yesterday. I believe we can make a difference. Thank you very much.
