English Script:
David Shoebridge: We know Australia exports military equipment to Israel, but the Albanese government is trying to gaslight you. Time and time again, senior ministers have made the claim.
Penny Wong: The advice I have is what the government has already made clear, that Australia has not supplied weapons to Israel since the conflict began, and for at least the past five years.
David Shoebridge: Not only is this untrue, but Minister Wong’s own department publishes information which shows that over the last five years Australia has provided nearly $10 million in arms and ammunition to Israel, including as recently as October 2023. Even the head economist of Minister Wong’s department admitted.
I would say there’s been no question or challenge to the credibility of any of the data that we publish.
David Shoebridge: But this data only shows a fraction of the military equipment we send. With government approval, Australian companies are also publicly celebrating their ties with the Israeli arms industry. For example, there’s the Tasmanian-based Currawong Engineering, which makes the engines for Israeli Thunder-B drones. There is Varley Australia, which makes launcher and missile control elements for the appalling Spike missile. The Spike missile is made by Israeli arms manufacturer Rafael and Varley is a critical part of their global supply chain. There are over 50 companies in Australia making essential parts for every F-35 fighter jet.
Netanyahu: We will continue to fight on land, at sea and in the air until total victory.
David Shoebridge: There are more and more examples we could list. Yet despite this the government says…
Penny Wong: Can I first reiterate what the government has made clear, and I have made clear in this chamber on numerous occasions. Australia has not supplied weapons to Israel since the conflict began and for at least the past five years.
David Shoebridge: What makes this even more frustrating is that Minister Wong’s colleagues have taken photo-op after photo-op at the very arms manufacturers that are making these weapons that apparently don’t exist. Here are three federal Labor MPs all with big smiles gathered around one of these very drone engines at Currawong. Here is Defence Minister Richard Miles at TAE Aerospace, just one of the many F-35 suppliers in Australia. Richard Miles at TAE Aerospace, just one of the many F-35 suppliers in Australia. And here’s Prime Minister Albanese at Varley.
