PALESTINIAN FACTIONS MEET IN MOSCOW IN ATTEMPT TO UNITE AGAINST ISRAEL
March 1, 2024Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov began important talks with Hamas and other Palestinian factions in Moscow today in an attempt to try and unite the groups to bolster their stance against Israel and gain leverage and power to negotiate for a final solution for their people.
The discussions began on a day when around 150 starving Palestinians were killed in Israeli fire in the Gaza Strip as they ran to aid trucks to secure food for their malnourished families. Lavrov warned Israel against its collective punishment strategy which has seen more than 30,000 civilians killed and more than 70,000 wounded.

Sergei Lavrov: It is understood that the main priority is to stop the bloodshed. We have been doing that since the first days after the attack of October 7, 2023. We condemn it but we cannot respond by collectively punishing the Palestinians.
“Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov warns against “collectively punishing” the Palestinians. This as the toll from Israel’s relentless military campaign in Gaza crosses 30,000 people. The Russian remarks came on a day when Israeli fire on Gaza aid-seekers killed over 100. Lavrov spoked at the opening of talks hosted by Moscow between various Palestinians factions. The factions hosted by Russian for talks include Fatah and Hamas, Reuters reported days earlier, Palestinian authority’s Govt resigned amid calls for its reformation. Top diplomat Lavrov urged Palestine groups to unite for the sake of Palestinians”.
Sergei Lavrov: The Gaza strip has been engulfed by violence on an unprecedented scale. To a large extent, this was the result of a long stagnation in the Middle East peace process due to US attempts to monopolize meditation efforts. On October 15 2023, Russia submitted a draft resolution to the UN Security council demanding a ceasefire. This draft, as well as subsequent efforts in this direction were consistently blocked by the United States, which repeatedly used its veto. Any attempt to pass a resolution demanding a sustained ceasefire has so far failed. We have said that relapsed of large-scale confrontation and violence in the region will inevitably recur until we work together to address the root cause of this long-standing conflict. Namely, the task of establishing a Palestinian State in accordance with UNSC and UNGA resolutions. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas Has changed the government, has resigned the previous one, and started the process of selecting new technocrat ministers, as announced. I hope that such an approach, indicating a desire to bring a neutral “tone” to the internal political process, will contribute to the intensification of inter-Palestinian dialogue. If you announce such a step, the restoration of Palestinian unity on the platform of the Palestine Liberation Organization, it will take all the “trump cards” out of the hands of those forces that, citing internal problems in the Palestinian territories, have used them to delay the Middle East peace process.
