Diane Macedo: Hi I am Diane Macedo, we have breaking news. ABC news has just learned President Biden is expected to announce a new plan to get more aid into Gaza during his State of the Union address tonight. Senior White House officials say this is an emergency military mission to construct a port on Gaza’s Mediterranean coast to deliver aid by sea. This comes as the U.N. Relief and Works Agency calls U.S. airdrops of food and aid into Gaza dangerous and inefficient, saying they are only effective if a ceasefire deal is reached. White House Correspondent Karen Travers joins me now for more on this. Karen, what more do you know about this new endeavor and what kind of an impact will it have given Ceasefire talks have stalled.
Karen Travers: Yeah, the White House is hoping that this will move more aid into Gaza more quickly than it’s been getting in on the ground, because they’ve been very frustrated Diane, with the pace of the trucks getting into Gaza. The White House is announcing that this is an emergency military mission to construct a port on the Mediterranean Sea on the coast of Gaza. That ports going to be able to get large ships carrying food, water, medicine and temporary shelters. The main feature will be a temporary pier that will have the capacity for hundreds of additional truckloads of assistance every single day. Now, this effort is going to be carried out by the United States and partner countries, but it’s not going to be immediate. The United States says it’s going to take several weeks to plan out and to execute. Notably, they say that the forces that are needed to complete this mission are already in the region or will be heading there soon. Diane, also important to note that a senior defense official says this operation is not going to require American troops to be on the ground. There were questions about that, how exactly that would work? And they later said that the U.S. military has unique capabilities and can do things from just offshore, that is extraordinary. So this is another way to get United States assistance in. We’ve seen those airdrops, but that has been very limited in scope, sort of a drop in the bucket compared to what the needs are on the ground in Gaza. And the administration has not been shy expressing frustrations with the pace of how the truckloads have been going in and how the Israelis have been coordinating on that. So this is another way to try to get it in through a maritime corridor.
