HAMAS TOOK HOSTAGES TO FACILITATE PRISONER SWAP

Israel constantly speaks about the hostages taken by Hamas on October 7. But, what is often forgotten, is the motive behind Hamas’ attack – one which sought to free Palestinian hostages taken by Israel, currently over 5000.

In a 2022 interview with Al-Jazeera, the chairman of Hamas’ political bureau, Ismail Haniyeh, stated: “Hamas’s foremost goal is the release of prisoners, particularly the six (soldiers) currently held. Just as we successfully liberated our detainees in the Gilad Shalit Prisoner Exchange (Wafq Al-Ahrar), we have the capability to achieve this again. If our adversaries doubt our capability, we will compel them to recognize our ability to act.”

All Palestinian HOSTAGES MUST BE RELEASED.

تتحدث إسرائيل بشكل مستمر عن الرهائن الذين احتجزتهم حماس في السابع من أكتوبر/تشرين الأول. ولكن ما يُنسى غالباً هو الدافع وراء هجوم حماس ـ ذلك الهجوم الذي كان يسعى إلى تحرير الرهائن الفلسطينيين الذين تحتجزهم إسرائيل، والذين يبلغ عددهم حالياً أكثر من خمسة آلاف رهينة.

ويجب إطلاق سراح جميع الرهائن الفلسطينيين.

Pere Huriwai-Seger: Western media will never tell you why Palestinian fighters took hostages because it challenges their narrative. They were taken for a hostage swap. At that time, Israel held 5000 Palestinian prisoners, including children, over a thousand held without charge or trial. The ones who are charged go through military records. In these courts, the judges and prosecutors are all Israeli occupation soldiers in uniform, and there is a 99% prosecution rate. Since 1967, more than 800,000 Palestinians have been detained, amounting to 40% of the male population. Israeli occupation forces inflict systematic, physical, psychological and sexual torture on detainees, beginning with violent arrests and escalating during interrogation. The Palestinian Prisoners Society reports 95% of Palestinian detainees have suffered torture. Children are not spared. Of the 500 to 700 Palestinian children that are kidnaped every year, Save the Children reports that 86% of them are beaten, 69% are strip searched and nearly half are injured at point of arrest, including gunshot wounds and broken bones. Some children also reported being transferred in small metal cages. Probably where Israel (apologists) got their idea for their now disproven propaganda. And things have gotten much worse. Just over the past few weeks, the number of Palestinian prisoners has almost doubled. Reports of abuse have increased and two Palestinian hostages have died in prison. Their families saying they were beaten to death. And so it may seem noble to demand the return of the hundreds of Israeli hostages, but without a similar call for the return of over 10,000 Palestinian hostages. It sends a clear message about which lives matter and which ones don’t, and it normalizes abduction and torture of Palestinians.
