Reporter: In Gaza City, the al-Shifa hospital and the streets around it are yet again in the eye of this war storm. Hamas released this footage fighting in the neighborhood around the hospital. It’s difficult to get an accurate take on exactly what happened there over the last 24 hours. But it is violent and it is bloody. Here’s what we know so far. Al Jazeera broadcast this footage thought to be filmed yesterday. In it, you can see one of the main hospital buildings and interspersed with gunfire. You can hear what’s thought to be an announcement by the IDF. Over loudspeakers, the people inside the hospital are addressed as follows: “If you leave the building, the soldiers will shoot at you.” The speaker then goes on: “Don’t mess with us”. Once we get the hostages we’ll allow you to leave. Al Jazeera were also given this footage. It shows large numbers of women and children inside the hospital, slowly moving down the stairs to shelter on the floors below. The IDF released this footage and said that they had conducted a major operation centered around the hospital. According to them, Hamas and Islamic Jihad militants had reoccupied a section of the complex.
Daniel Hagari: Until now, we have arrested over 250 Hamas and Islamic Jihad terrorists that we identified.
Reporter: The IDF said that it killed 50 Hamas gunmen in the last 24 hours, taking the number of fighters killed around the hospital this week to a 140, along with two Israeli soldiers who died.
That was according to the IDF, though, people fleeing the hospital today had a different interpretation of what happened there. Um Hadid Awad was sheltering in the hospital with her triplets.
Um Hadid Awad: They besieged us. We were there for three days without water, without food, without drinks. We have triplets. We couldn’t find them any water to drink or milk.
Reporter: Um Ousama al Sakini says the shooting inside the hospital was at times indiscriminate, something the IDF denied.
Um Ousama al Sakini: They took over department by department. They started with emergency department. They told the men to come down. Some men didn’t come down. When the men didn’t come down, they executed them.
Reporter: On Monday this week, we brought you the story of brother and sister. Rafif and Rafik Dougmash. Both had limbs amputated after an Israeli airstrike and were being treated in Al-Shifa Hospital.
The British Charity Medical Aid for Palestinians is trying to evacuate the siblings.
Melanie Ward: So the last we heard is that Rafiq and Rafif are still in Al-Shifa Hospital. Their uncle was last able to speak to them this morning, but now all communications have been lost. They said that they had no food. They said that they had no water and no one is able to contact them anymore.
So we are seriously concerned about them and about all of the other patients who remain in Al-Shifa Hospital. They’re not by themselves, they’re kids who are alone.
Reporter: What’s happened at Al-Shifa is embarrassing for the IDF. Remember, we’ve been here before.
The hospital was the focal point of a military operation back in the autumn, and at the time the IDF showed off what they said was Hamas tunnels and weaponry. The fact that they’ve lost control of such a high-profile site will raise questions about the extent to which they can meaningfully secure anywhere in Gaza City.
