BREAKING NEWS ABRAHAM ACCORDS IN TATTERS UAE HALTS TIES WITH ISRAEL
April 5, 2024Following in Bahrain’s footsteps in November, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) yesterday SUSPENDED diplomatic cooperation with Israel in the wake of the killing of seven World Central Kitchen (WCK) aid workers in Gaza this week.
Israeli news outlet i24News reported that Director General of the Israeli Foreign Ministry, Yaakov Blitshtein, met with Ambassador Mohammed Mahmoud Al-Khaja in an attempt to find a resolution. Ambassador Al-Khaja described the current state of affairs as “the darkest day in the relations between the countries.”
For context, the UAE and Bahrain signed a normalisation deal with Israel, mediated by the United States, on September 15, 2020. This was termed ‘The Abraham Accords’, highlighting the similar belief in Abraham amongst both Muslims and Jews. In exchange for Israeli recognition, the UAE and Bahrain were offered military deals, including the selling of F-35 fighter jets to Abu Dhabi, and a promise to halt settlement expansion in the Occupied Palestinian Territories. Later, Morrocco and Sudan followed suit and normalised relations with Israel too.
Ongoing efforts to address the crisis are underway, with Israel’s Foreign Minister, Israel Katz, engaging in a phone call with his Emirati counterpart, Abdullah bin Zayed.
